Henry Staven,  a seaman on board the   barque Especulador,     was charged with absent without leave -------

Oamaru  -  Fatal accident  -  MACANDREW  -  006
A fatal accident occurred at Incholme,  Kakanui --  a man named Alex Macandrew ------   was in the act of getting on a threshing machine,  slipped, 
and died before doctor arrived  -----    was 35 years old  --- owned a farm with his brother at Portobello.

----  Mr Well,  painter,  -----fell from the box seat of the Tai-Tapu coach ----   cut and bruised ----  ----

Samuel Badham, ----   deserted his wife 3 years since,  --- remanded to 14 May.

Henry Close was killed at Waikaia by a tree falling on him,  it is not known if he had any friends in the Colony.

Accident  -  PATERSON  -  014
on the Waiouaiti  line  ---- James Paterson,  a man employed by Government,  was slung in ---  a boatswain's chair over a steep precipice -------   died
soon after,  was a single man,  in the Colony about 15 years ---  9 years on the West Coast ----  crushing mill with James Kearn.

A man named Harman  died in hospital  on Saturday  from injuries he received by the fall of earth at Anderson's Bay.

Lyttelton  -  DEVINE  -  017
Constable Devine,  of the Police force stationed here,  fell down dead in the police yard --------   very much respected in Lyttelton.

Accident  -   WALKER  -  019
An accident occurred at Oxford  to Thomas Walker,  a settler in the Cust district.  While taking a load of firewood home from Oxford,  one of the leading
horses gave a sudden jump to one side and knocked Walker over,  before he could get out of the way one of the wheels passed over his leg just above
the ankle and completely shattered the bones ------

yesterday afternoon  Mr Robert Robinson,  a farmer residing at Avonside, -----   his wife found upon the river bank a lady's black straw hat ,  money
and a pair of black kid gloves and a bill showing they had been purchased that day  ----  piece of black ribbon and a white handerkerchief marked
E. Bowling -------  a long  column -----   river dragged -- body found,       inquest to follow

---  15 passengers on board ---- descending the Horse ranges -- traces of one of the horses became loose.  GOODARD  a careful driver,  been on the
road for 9 years----  on the box was also a young man named Maitland ----   Goddard the driver was seriously injured ----  lots more  ------

Young Maitland ----   died this morning ----  son of Mr J.P.Maitland  on his way to school at Christchurch.-------  inquest adjourned to 6 June -----

------  appeared Mr Nicholls had been killed,  several othere injured ----------  Mr Frank Fulton was on the box seat,   having Mr Maitland's son on his
knee ---    Mr A. Cheatham Strode,  of Dunedin,    had 2 sons on the coach ---      Mr Hunter,  of Wellington,    Mr Bishop,  of the Sun newspaper of
Christchurch,      Mr Cullis Hill,  of Melbourne,     Mr J. Cameron,  of Timaru,     Mr Valpy,  of Dunedin  were also passengers

A man named John Keating,  injured on Saturday  by a kick from a horse at   Jonas, Hart & Wilde's  saleyard,  died today.

CHALMERS  -  a farmer met with a --- accident while driving his team into Ashburton ----   fell ----wheel of dray passed over him -----  
CATON  -  John   not Keating   kicked at Jonas's Repository,  Timaru  died in hospital ----  an inquest will be held today.

Body Found  -  049
on Sunday afternoon --  the body of a man was found on the sea beach near Longbeach Station.  about 5' 6"  high,  dark hair,  and beard, 
with small moustache ---  an inquest will be held.

-- Locomotive Dept,  Timaru  presented the foreman Mr W. Syms  with ----  leaving to take charge of ----   Oamaru --- handsome black marble clock

The Late Mr William HOBBS  -  052
Canterbury,  on Sunday,  lost an old and respected colonist,  Mr William Hobbs -----   came out to Canterbury from England in 1855  in the Caroline Agnes 
from the same village as Mr George Gould of this city -----   Hobbs & Sons,   now Hobbs & Co.    he leaves 3 sons,   Messrs William,   Frederick,  
and  Francis Hobbs  ----  lots more  -----

Death  -  St. JOHN  -  054
Mr C.E. St.John,  a gentleman known in Christchurch and to many in Akaroa,  died ----  been a Lieutenant in the Navy  and when in India,   received a
sunstroke ------  some 3mths ago left Akaroa ------- and taken a passage for England  when he became so bad  he was unable to proceed -----

Auckland  - BURROWS  -  055
A man named Burrows,  in the employ of Mr Walters,  of Papa Toitoi,  was killed on Monday evening  by falling from his dray -----

Neglected Child  -  AUSTIN  -  058
An application was made by the mother of the boy named George Austin,  that he might be sent to the Industrial school ---  father was dead  --- she had
since remarried  -------   application refused.

Desertion  -  CARTER  -  059
Clement James Carter,  ----   charged with wife desertion  -----  also making a false statement of particulars required to be known under the registration
of BMD  Act 1875. ----  admitted the charge ---  on 3 october a birth was registered by Clement Jas. Carter,   child according to the enrty was born on
25 August 1877  at Addington  and named George Clement. ----  fathers name was given as Clement James Carter,  a butcher,  54 years old,  born at
Kingston on Thames,    married 15 August 1876  at Timaru,    Mother' s name   Martha Carter,  formerly Roach,  age 27  born at Redruth,  Cornwall ------  
no marriage registered at Timaru between Carter and Roach ----   committed for trial  at the next session of the Supreme Court.
