Emigration to New Zealand -  002 & 003
The 1st vessel chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Co for the conveyancing of emigrants  to NZ  was the Punjaub  which sailed from England
on 1 June 1873. During the 6mths of the year  no less than 31 vessels were dispatched with 10,000 souls and 40,000  tons of cargo.  --------

                        said he was married to Eliza in April 1868 or 1869 -- married at Rev C.Fraser's house, Christchurch.

WATTS-RUSSELL -   
The Late Mr J.C.
Another of our old Canterbury pilgrims has passed away  ----  John Charles Watts-Russell  died yesterday morning  --- was the youngest son of the 1st family
of Jesse Watts-Russell, Esq. of Ilam Hall, Stafordshire,  who is still living  upwards of the age  90 ----  married in Ireland in 1850  came here aged about 25  on the
Sir George Seymour  arriving 17 December 1850,  his land adjoined the Deans and founded another Ilam.------ he became a run-holder in 1851 or 1852 
in the Malvern Hills --- towards the end of 1855  he returned to England with his wife---  came back in the Westminster at the end of 1858 --
 left again for England in 1866 and again returned in 1871

Eliza Ann, charged with having on 27 April 1869,   married James Flynn  having previously on 24 May 1861,   married to Benjamin Ward  widower, her
                                1st husband left her,  when she married the 2nd time she thought her husband was dead, and nothing to show that Mr Ward hadn't been absent for 7 years
                  -------   verdict -  not guilty----

The report on immigration to Canterbury  for 12mths  from 1 March 1874  to  1 March 1875 ------
26 immigrant ships arrived at Lyttelton,  11 from London,  10 from Plymouth,  4 from Glasgow,  1 from Hamburg  carrying 10,098 immigrants,  1120 were nominated  ---
Adults of 12 years and over,  6935,  children under 12, 3163,    1758 families,  single men 2288,  single women  1273.  
They went to  Timaru district, 1825,  Ashburton district, 530,  Ellesmere district, 260,  Northern district (including Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Kowai, Oxford)  750, 
Port Victoria district including Lyttelton, Governor's Bay, and Head of Bay,  90  Peninsula district including Akaroa and Bays  280.
farm labourers  wages -  married couples 60 to 70 pounds,  and all found,   married men  25s to 30s per week with cottage,  single men 45 - 55 pounds per annum  and all found,  
domestic servants 25 to 35 pounds per annum  -----   long column ----

19 deaths were registered here last week, --- measles and fever are spreading ---  5 funerals of children yesterday, 2 from one family, which lost an infant 2 weeks ago.
